Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CSV or Excel data to a LaTeX table?

Copy the cells in Excel or Google Sheets, paste them into the box above (they arrive tab-separated), and the LaTeX table appears instantly. Plain CSV with commas or semicolons works too. The delimiter is auto-detected.

What is booktabs and why use it?

booktabs is the standard package for professional LaTeX tables. It replaces \hline with \toprule, \midrule, and \bottomrule, better spacing, no vertical lines, the style used by most journals. Add \usepackage{booktabs} to your preamble.

Are special characters like % and & handled?

Yes. Every character that breaks a LaTeX table (& % $ # _ { } ~ ^ and the backslash) is escaped in each cell, so pasted data compiles without "Misplaced alignment tab" or "Missing $ inserted" errors. Untick escaping if your cells already hold LaTeX, such as $\alpha$.

Can it make merged header cells?

Yes. Merge the cells in Excel or Sheets and copy as usual: a merged header arrives as its text followed by empty cells, and becomes \multicolumn with a \cmidrule under it. Choose two header rows for the common layout of a group row over a row of column names.

My table is too wide for the page, what do I do?

Wrap it in \resizebox{\textwidth}{!}{...}, switch to tabularx with X columns, or reduce font size with \small. Full options in our table-too-wide guide.
