How to Publish Your First Paper: The Whole Process
Publishing a paper is four or five separate documents, not one. You write the manuscript in the publisher's format, a cover letter to the editor, and later a response to reviewers. Some fields expect a registered report or a protocol before any results exist. Almost every first-time author knows about the manuscript and is surprised by the rest, usually at the point one is suddenly due.
This is the whole sequence, in order, with the document each stage needs.
What a submission actually involves
A paper is not one document. Open a stage to see what you write and start from the template for it.
The paper itself, in the class the publisher requires. Getting this right is what stops a desk rejection on format, which happens before anyone reads the science.

How long each stage takes varies enormously by field and venue, so there are no numbers here. What you control is having the right document ready when it is asked for.
Choose the venue before you write
This is the single decision that saves the most work, and it is the one most often made last. A publisher sets the length limit, the section order, the reference style, the figure format and often the exact class file. Writing a finished draft and then choosing a journal means converting all of it, and conversion is where citations break and figures move.
Pick the venue first, open its template, and the formatting stops being a task at all. If you are unsure which venue, shortlist two and check the author guidelines of both before the first paragraph is written. The guidelines are dull and they are the specification.
The manuscript is judged on format before it is read
A desk rejection is a rejection by an editor before any reviewer sees the work, and formatting is one of the reasons it happens. That is a frustrating way to lose a month, and it is entirely avoidable: the publisher distributes a class file precisely so that a correctly prepared manuscript is unambiguous.
Start from the right one. IEEEtran for IEEE, elsarticle for Elsevier, llncs for Springer proceedings, acmart for ACM, RevTeX for the Physical Review family, AASTeX for astronomy. The filter above lists every one we carry.
The cover letter nobody mentions
Most journals require a cover letter, and it is addressed to the editor rather than to the reviewers. It is short. It says what the paper claims, why this journal is the right home for that claim, and that the work is not under review anywhere else. Some venues also ask you to suggest or exclude reviewers here.
It is not a summary of the abstract in different words. The editor is deciding whether to send your paper out at all, so the useful content is the one sentence that explains why their readers specifically should see it. There is a cover letter template to start from.
What peer review is actually asking
Reviewers are not asking whether the paper is good. They are asking whether the claim is supported by the evidence presented, whether someone else could repeat the work from what is written, and whether the contribution is what the paper says it is. Comments that read as hostile are usually one of those three questions asked briskly by someone doing it unpaid at the end of a long week.
Read the whole set once, then leave it for a day. The first reading is about feelings and the second is about work.
The response document is where papers are won
Your response is a separate document, and its structure matters more than its prose. Quote each comment in full. Answer it directly beneath. Say exactly what changed and where, by section and if possible by line. If you disagree, say so plainly and give the reason; a well-argued refusal is a normal and accepted outcome, and reviewers are not expecting to win every point.
What loses papers here is a response that is hard to check. An editor holding a list of twenty comments and a response that addresses them out of order, without pointers, has to reconstruct the mapping themselves. Make it verifiable and the decision gets easier to make in your favour. The response to reviewers template lays this out.
If your field registers studies, decide early
In a growing number of fields a venue will review the plan before the results exist. That is what a registered report is: the introduction, the method and the analysis plan, reviewed and accepted in principle, with publication not conditional on what the results turn out to be. It removes the incentive to shape findings afterwards, which is the point.
This is decided before you collect anything, so it belongs at the start of the process rather than at the end. If it applies to you, start from the stage one template.
Writing it without a TeX install
Every template here opens on LetX and compiles in the browser, which matters most for exactly this kind of document: a supervisor and two co-authors can read and edit the same file while you write, and nobody has to install a multi-gigabyte distribution to leave a comment. Your unpublished work is never used to train AI.
If you are writing a thesis rather than a paper, the university thesis templates cover 87 institutions, and the research paper templates post lists the article formats in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
What documents do I need to submit a paper?
At minimum the manuscript in the publisher's format and a cover letter to the editor. After review you write a response to reviewers, which quotes each comment and answers it beneath. Some fields also expect a registered report or a protocol before the results exist. Most first-time authors know about the first and are surprised by the rest.
Should I choose the journal before or after writing?
Before. Length limits, section order and reference style are set by the publisher, so writing first and choosing later means reformatting a finished draft into a different class. Pick the venue, start from its template, and the formatting is handled as you write.
What is a cover letter for a journal submission?
A short letter to the editor, not to the reviewers. It states what the paper claims, why this venue is the right home for it, and that the work is not under review elsewhere. It is required by most journals and is the document first-time authors most often do not know is coming.
How do I respond to peer review comments?
Write a separate response document. Quote each reviewer comment in full, answer it directly beneath, and point to what changed in the manuscript and where. Reviewers are checking whether you engaged with the criticism, and a response that is easy to verify is easy to accept.
How long does peer review take?
It varies enormously by field and venue, from a few weeks to the better part of a year, so treat any single number you read with suspicion. What you control is having each document ready when it is asked for rather than starting it then.
Do I need LaTeX to publish a paper?
Not always, but most physics, mathematics, computer science and engineering venues either require it or make it far easier, because they publish a class file that produces exactly the layout they want. LetX has ready-to-use templates for IEEE, Elsevier, Springer, ACM, Nature, PLOS, MDPI and more, and they compile in the browser with no install.
