Frequently asked questions
How do I write an equation in LaTeX?
Put it between $ and $ to keep it in the line of text, or between \[ and \] to set it on its own line. For a numbered equation use the equation environment from amsmath. Build it above, pick the format, and copy the result.
How do I number an equation and refer to it?
Choose "Numbered equation". It wraps the maths in \begin{equation} with a \label, and \eqref{eq:my-equation} anywhere in the text prints its number in brackets.
How do I align several lines of an equation?
End each line with \\ and put & before the symbol the lines should line up on, usually =. Choose "align" and the lines come out in an align environment, each numbered unless you use align* instead.
Can I paste the equation into Word?
Use Copy MathML. Recent versions of Word turn pasted MathML into an editable equation. If yours pastes it as text, open Insert, Equation, switch the equation to LaTeX input, and paste the LaTeX instead.
Why can the preview differ from my PDF?
The preview is drawn by KaTeX in your browser, which follows LaTeX closely but not in every detail. Open in LetX compiles the equation with real LaTeX, which is what your paper will use.
