RIS to BibTeX Converter

Paste or open an RIS file from EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero or a publisher’s Download citation button and get a clean .bib for LaTeX: one entry per reference, readable keys, acronyms protected. It runs in your browser, so your file is never uploaded to convert it.

Have a DOI instead? The BibTeX citation generator turns a DOI or arXiv ID into an entry. More on citations and bibliographies in LaTeX, BibTeX or biblatex, and Zotero to LaTeX.

Frequently asked questions

What is an RIS file?

RIS is a plain-text format for references that almost every reference manager and publisher can export. Each line holds one piece of a reference behind a two-letter tag, such as AU for an author or PY for the year. BibTeX is the format LaTeX reads, so an RIS file has to be converted before \cite can use it.

How do I export RIS from EndNote, Mendeley or Zotero?

In EndNote, choose File, Export, and the output style RefMan (RIS) Export. In Mendeley and Zotero, select the references or a collection, choose Export, and pick RIS. On a publisher's article page, the Cite or Download citation button usually offers RIS.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser. A file you choose is read on your own device and is not sent to LetX or anyone else, unless you choose to open the result as a LetX project.

Why are some words in the title wrapped in braces?

Many bibliography styles lowercase titles, which turns BERT into bert and LaTeX into latex. Braces tell BibTeX to leave a word exactly as written, so acronyms and words with capitals inside them are wrapped. Untick the option if your style keeps titles as they are.

How do I use the .bib file in LaTeX?

Save it as references.bib next to your document. With BibTeX, add \bibliographystyle{plain} and \bibliography{references} and cite with \cite{key}. With biblatex, use \addbibresource{references.bib} and \printbibliography.
